i want to bring my Betta home for spring brake. is there a safe way to bring him back?

he will be returning with me at the end of brake to the dorm. i will have a residence set up for him at my home, that will be safe for him and felines around.
it is a two hour car drive back in upstate new york.
i was thinking a coffee mug, cause i can put a lid on it, and keep him in the dark so not to scare him

HI, a 2 hour drive shouldn’t be a problem but I would recommend you transport him in his tank [assuming it's 3 gallon plastic tank or less] & lower the level & take extra water. If the tank is larger than 3 gallons &/or is not plastic then I would advise getting a small one to transport him. Several other things I would suggest:

1. Get yourself a battery operated airpump.

2. Remove all the loose & unsecured objects from his tank, if it has a removable filter remove that but place the media [foam] in a sealable container with enough tank water to cover it-this will preserve the bacterial colony

3. Secure the lid of the tank firmly with a couple of strips of tape-NOT around the edge of the lid but across the top & down the sides. You need to ensure you don’t block all the holes. Also if the filer is removable & leaves a large gap then tape across the gap.

4. The first thing you do when you get to your destination is re-build his home, then you can unpack your stuff!

You should be ok as long as you maintain his tank as level & still as possible. I would recommend you do a partial water change & not feed him the day before the move as he will be spending time without a filter so the less his water is polluted the better, have a great trip!
